Water Purification Technology

Water bodies are hugely contaminated due to raw sewage running into lake or streams. Major contamination of groundwater come from industrial waste spills, radioactive spills along with illegal dumping of substances, or items in bodies of water. Furthermore biological contamination, such as bacterial growth also pollutes water bodies. Many Science & Technology Research institutes have developed technologies to find application in the areas of locating water sources ; water purification, water recycling and water quality assessment. The main focus of these technologies is to provide safe drinking water and purification and recycling of water.

What is arsenic?
Arsenic is a naturally occurring pollutant in ground water. It is a semi-metal element that enters drinking water supplies from natural deposits in the earth or from agricultural and industrial practices.

Health Hazards: Due to continued ingestion of arsenic-laden water, people may suffer from problems such as skin lesions and cancer of the skin, lung, kidney, bladder and liver. In addition to that, use of contaminated groundwater in irrigation is also responsible for transmission of arsenic through the food chain, accounting for nearly 50 percent of the total arsenic exposure in many regions of South Asia.

Status of Arsenic Treatment Plants in West Bengal:

  1. About half a dozen Subterranean Arsenic Removal (SAR) plants developed by Ramakrishna Vivekananda Mission, Barrackpore were set up in rural Bengal with help from an association of researchers from UK, Germany, Spain & the Netherlands. (www.insituarsenic.org).
  2. Planning commission undertook development of Technology Mission on Drinking Water in villages and related water management, quality affected habitations with focus on their remedy. (http://planningcommission.nic.in/sectors/water.php?sectors=water).
  3. 63 Ceramic Membrane-based Community Model Plants have been installed for Iron and Arsenic removal and all are in operation in West Bengal
  4. Several Iron Removal Plants have been installed by several private entrepreneurs under SSI sector that generated huge employment.
